Decide what to keep before deciding what to repaint

We help Birmingham homeowners plan painting around the details that give a room its character. That can mean keeping a wood finish, refreshing painted trim, or changing the walls around an existing fireplace.

Birmingham’s historic design-guidelines project reflects the city’s attention to architectural character. We take that as a useful starting point for the conversation: which details matter most to you?

That question applies to both older houses and newer rooms. It does not mean every Birmingham property is historic. If your property has a historic designation, discuss planned exterior changes with the city before finalizing the scope.

Make room-to-room transitions intentional

A living room repaint can affect how the adjoining hallway and dining room look. We discuss the view through doorways, the ceiling line, and any trim shared between spaces.

For interior painting, identify the boundaries of the project first. Painting one room may be enough; including connected doors or baseboards may create a more consistent result.

  • Keep a list of existing colors or finishes you like.
  • Show us where old and new paint will meet.
  • Point out dents or patches that show under side lighting.

We can include suitable drywall repairs before the repaint. Repair scope depends on the wall material and condition.

Update cabinets without choosing the whole kitchen again

If the kitchen layout works, we can assess whether cabinet refinishing fits the existing doors and boxes.

Compare a proposed cabinet color with the counters and tile in your kitchen’s light. A sample viewed alone may not show how the finishes work together. Tell us whether hardware is staying, so its color and placement are part of the discussion.

Exterior details deserve their own scope

For exterior painting, separate the surfaces into groups: siding, painted trim, doors, and other included details. Identify anything that should remain unpainted. This makes an estimate easier to review than a single instruction to repaint the whole house.

Questions we can work through together

Can you repaint the walls while keeping existing wood trim?

We can discuss protecting the wood and defining the paint edges during the estimate. Let us know which surfaces must remain untouched.

Can the kitchen and adjoining room be planned together?

Yes. Share both spaces when requesting an estimate, including the finishes you intend to retain.

Is Birmingham part of your regular service area?

Yes. We serve Birmingham along with the communities in our service-area hub. Send the project address and a short description to get started.
